What's included in the Compare Numbers Continuous Provision resource and why is it useful?

Year 1 Compare Numbers Continuous Provision resource includes planning for eight provision activities. The planning can be used to set up the activities in one or more provision areas, such as small world, construction or maths area. The activities have been designed for children to access independently as part of the lesson or as a follow-up. Each activity covers how to compare numbers and use the language less than, greater than and equal to.

This pack includes ideas for the following areas:

• Small World area – compare numbers in car parking spaces

• Small World area – compare how many ‘people’ are standing at the bus stops on a town mat

• Role Play area – compare prices of labelled toys in a toy shop

• Creative area – create creative crocodiles or monster symbols and use them to compare numbers

• Water area – scoop out various items to compare amounts

• Outdoor area – create a chalk scoreboard and compare scores

• Maths area – use different representations and compare

• Reading area – book recommendations

How do our continuous provision resources work?

Our Continuous Provision resources work best alongside our teaching PowerPoints, which walk you through the whole lesson along with other lesson resources that you can find on our Compare Numbers lesson page. Children can use the activities to flexibly access their learning to improve fluency or to deepen and apply their knowledge as part of their reasoning and problem solving.

The Continuous Provision activities:

• Can be used at different points throughout the lesson.

• Can be used alongside the Varied Fluency and Reasoning and Problem Solving worksheets to provide meaningful opportunities for practice.

• Can be used to revisit the activities to consolidate their understanding, giving them the time and space to really focus and deepen their thinking and reasoning skills, which supports mastery of the concept.

• Support observation and assessment as children apply their learning independently through play.
