What's included in the Subtraction - Take Away/Cross Out (How Many Left?) Continuous Provision resource and why is it useful?

Year 1 Subtraction - Take Away/Cross Out (How Many Left?) Continuous Provision resource includes planning for eight provision activities. The planning can be used to set up the activities in one or more provision areas, such as small world, construction or maths area. The activities have been designed for children to access independently as part of the lesson or as a follow-up. Each activity covers how to represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 10.

This pack includes ideas for the following areas:

• Maths area – take toys out of a box and find how many are left

• Small world area – move animals into the barn and count those left

• Construction area – take bricks off a tower and count those left

• Investigation area – drop marbles through a tube and count those left

• Water area – scoop out fish and count how many are left

• Fine motor area – pop bubble wrap and count how many are left

• Outdoor area – knock down bottles and count how many are left

• Reading area – act out Ten in the Bed and count those left

How do our continuous provision resources work?

Our Continuous Provision resources work best alongside our teaching PowerPoints, which walk you through the whole lesson along with other lesson resources that you can find on our Subtraction - Take Away/Cross Out (How Many Left?) lesson page. Children can use the activities to flexibly access their learning to improve fluency or to deepen and apply their knowledge as part of their reasoning and problem solving.

The Continuous Provision activities:

• Can be used at different points throughout the lesson.

• Can be used alongside the Varied Fluency and Reasoning and Problem Solving worksheets to provide meaningful opportunities for practice.

• Can be used to revisit the activities to consolidate their understanding, giving them the time and space to really focus and deepen their thinking and reasoning skills, which supports mastery of the concept.

• Support observation and assessment as children apply their learning independently through play.
