This Year 2 Autumn 2 Baseline Assessment is designed to assess understanding of spelling objectives covered during this term when following our suggested spelling sequence.
Presented in a format similar to that used in formal assessments to build familiarity with those, this assessment can be used as a baseline at the start of the half-term or as an assessment at the end of the half-term. S9, S10, S11 and S12: Words ending in ‘y’, words with ‘ph’ or ‘wh’, the prefix ‘un-’ and compound words
S14: The /j/ sound spelt ‘g’, ‘ge’ or ‘dge’
S15 and S37: The /s/ sound spelt ‘c’ before ‘e’, ‘i’ or ‘y’ and Year 2 common exception words
Curriculum Objectives
- vowel digraphs and trigraphs: ai, oi, ay, oy, a–e, e–e, i–e, o–e, u–e, ar, ee, ea (/i:/), ea (/ɛ/), er (/ɜ:/), er (/ə/), ir, ur, oo (/u:/), oo(/ʊ/), oa, oe, ou, ow (/aʊ/), ow (/əʊ/), ue, ew, ie (/aɪ/), ie (/i:/), igh, or, ore, aw, au, air, ear, ear (/ɛə/), are (/ɛə/)
- words ending in –y (/i:/ or /ɪ/)
- new consonant spellings ph and wh
- using k for the /k/ sound
