Develop children's understanding of what cooling does to states of matter with this What Happens When We Cool Materials? Investigation Lesson

In this Year 4 lesson, pupils will engage in a practical investigation to observe how water changes state when cooled and the key concepts involved, recording findings in a table and graph to draw scientific conclusions from their fair test. A video is used to spark observations and scientific discussions at the start of the lesson.

National Curriculum Objectives:

  • Observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure or research the temperature at which this happens in degrees Celsius (°C).
