Help children understand what causes a change of state in a substance with this Year 5 What Happens when Substances Change? Investigation Lesson.

In this Year 5 PowerPoint, pupils will learn key vocabulary linked to substances (such as change of state, reversible and irreversible), then learn how chemical reactions cause a new substance to be created. After comparing known examples of reversible and irreversible changes, they will complete an investigation into chemical reactions by measuring how different amounts of bicarbonate of soda added to vinegar change the reaction. Results will be recorded in a table and as a graph, then understanding will be deepened by repeating the experiment but replacing vinegar with other substances.
