Now that children are becoming increasingly familiar with mixtures and solutions, help them understand how a mixture can be separated with this Year 5 How Can We Separate Different Mixtures? Investigation Lesson.
In this Year 5 PowerPoint, pupils will recap what a mixture is before learning about three methods for separating mixtures: filtering, sieving and evaporating. They will then take part in a practical investigation to separate a mixture of sand, salt and water first by filtering the sand from the salt water then by evaporating the water to leave salt behind. They will record findings in a table and create a graph to draw scientific conclusions from their fair test.
