Suffixes Guidance

An image of the Suffixes Guidance Resource

Are your class ready to delve deeper into word classes and suffixes? Use our Year 5 Suffixes Guidance to offer you support in ordering a series of lessons and help you to deliver the individual lessons to a high quality.

This resource starts off with a timetable to suggest where in the year this unit of work could be taught. It then gives an overview of what objectives are covered in this guidance, followed by an individual page for each proposed lesson. The lessons include word classes and looking at their functions within a sentence, learning about the suffixes '-ate', '-ise' and '-ify' such as how they are added to root words and applying this to their independent writing.

Each small step or lesson guidance page includes a notes and guidance section that covers what children should be aware of before they begin the lesson and what the expected outcome should be of this lesson. There are a series of focussed questions that you could incorporate into your teaching too. This guidance works well with the corresponding resources for this lesson, and these include things like worksheets, teaching resources and much more!
