Bring the magic of Katherine Rundell’s Impossible Creatures into your classroom with this Year 6 Katherine Rundell Discussion Prompts pack of 24 thought-provoking discussion cards, designed to get Year 6 children talking, reasoning and listening to each other.

The cards are organised into four themes, so you can match a discussion to where your class is in the book or to the skills you want to focus on. Katherine Rundell’s Writing explores why authors create imaginary worlds and how words can paint pictures in our minds. The Archipelago invites children to step into the book’s hidden world and think about the rules that shape it. Creatures and Conservation links mythical beasts to real-world questions about protecting animals and their habitats. Character Choices tackles big ideas such as courage, trust, sacrifice and whether breaking the rules can ever be right.

Every card comes with a possible sentence stem to help children structure their answers and give reasons for their opinions. These stems give less confident speakers a way into the conversation, while the open-ended questions leave plenty of room for more able children to extend their thinking, build on others’ ideas and respectfully challenge different points of view.

The cards are flexible enough to use in lots of ways: as a lesson starter or plenary, for paired talk or small-group discussion, as prompts for a whole-class debate, during guided reading sessions, or as a springboard into persuasive or discursive writing. Simply print, cut out and you’re ready to go.

Download the pack today and watch your class’s love of Impossible Creatures turn into rich, reasoned discussion.
