This Year 6 Mixed Addition and Subtraction resource recaps the Year 5 steps of Add Mixed Numbers and the Year 5 Subtract Mixed Numbers so that children feel secure and comfortable in approaching the Year 6 step. The resource is made up of three varied fluency questions and three reasoning and problem-solving questions. There is a useful answer sheet that you can either let children self-mark or peer mark from, or for you to use for speed.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Recognise mixed numbers and improper fractions and convert from one form to the other and write mathematical statements > 1 as a mixed number [for example, 2/5 + 4/5 = 6/5 = 1 1/5 ]
  • Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator and denominators that are multiples of the same number
