War Horse Chapter 12 Comprehension Whole Class Guided Reading

War Horse Chapter 12 Comprehension for Whole Class Guided Reading includes differentiated questions and activities based on chapter twelve of the popular novel by Michael Morpurgo. We recommend using this novel with Year 5 & Year 6. In this chapter, Joey and Topthorn are put to work as part of a gun team with four other horses. Throughout the chapter, Joey describes the winter getting worse and how soldiers and horses are on food rations. The horses are struggling to pull the heavy guns as there is no food for strength and the mud and cold are causing them to get ill. Two of their gun team are put to sleep and one night, Topthorn is seriously ill. Joey cares for him as best he can and in the morning, Topthorn seems better. The vet declares him fit for work against his better judgement. Joey muses that while Herr Major and the other soldiers are doing what they can, it is the mud, lack of shelter and lack of food that are killing the horses off one by one.
