Support purposeful mathematical talk in the Early Years with this comprehensive EYFS Number Question Prompts pack. Designed to be used alongside EYFS maths resources, the suggested questions help practitioners explore children’s understanding, encourage them to explain their thinking and develop mathematical language.

The pack covers a wide range of number concepts, including matching objects to numerals, representing numbers, comparing quantities, one-to-one correspondence, subitising, number bonds, addition, ordering, one more and one less, estimating, doubling and halving, and subtraction.

For quick and easy planning, links to the corresponding EYFS maths resources are included throughout the pack, allowing practitioners to move directly from the suggested questions to the relevant activities and resources.

The prompts can be used flexibly during adult-led activities, within continuous provision or when observing children as they explore mathematical concepts through play. Practitioners can select the questions most appropriate for each child, activity or learning opportunity, making this a useful resource for supporting mathematical reasoning and discussion across the EYFS.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Have a deep understanding of number to 10, including the composition of each number
  • Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5
  • Automatically recall (without reference to rhymes, counting or other aids) number bonds up to 5 (including subtraction facts) and some number bonds to 10, including double facts
  • Verbally count beyond 20, recognising the pattern of the counting system
  • Compare quantities up to 10 in different contexts, recognising when one quantity is greater than, less than or the same as the other quantity
  • Explore and represent patterns within numbers up to 10, including evens and odds, double facts and how quantities can be distributed equally
