This EYFS Recall One More Learning Activity enables children to develop their understanding of the one more than relationship between consecutive numbers. Children identify the number at the beginning of the function machine and then recall what is one more. Children can write the numeral in the box to show their answer or use number cards instead. This activity can be completed practically, using equipment if necessary, but children should be encouraged to recall the one more than facts wherever possible.

It covers the following objectives for children in reception:

(M-23) Link the number symbol (numeral) with its cardinal number value.

(M-26) Understand the one more than/one less than relationship between consecutive numbers.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Have a deep understanding of number to 10, including the composition of each number
  • Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5
  • Automatically recall (without reference to rhymes, counting or other aids) number bonds up to 5 (including subtraction facts) and some number bonds to 10, including double facts
