In this chapter, Joey and Albert are both elated to have found each other again but this excitement quickly turns to worry when Joey becomes ill. Major Martin, the vet, feels it would be better to put Joey to sleep and not let him suffer but Albert, his friend David and the Sergeant Major convince him to treat Joey. Albert and David look after Joey for the following weeks and eventually, he appears to pull through his illness. Albert is thankful and cannot wait to take Joey back home at the end of the war.
