In this chapter, Joey is introduced to his new rider, Trooper Warren. Joey finds he is not a good rider but he is gentle and kind in the way he cares for Joey. As the winter sets in, the cavalry are used less and less. The days and nights are long, cold and wet but Joey and Topthorn make it through to the spring. The cavalry are called upon once again to charge into battle.
