What's included in the 1 Less Continuous Provision resource and why is it useful?

Year 1 1 Less Continuous Provision resource includes planning for eight provision activities. The planning can be used to set up the activities in one or more provision areas, such as small world, construction or maths area. The activities have been designed for children to access independently as part of the lesson or as a follow-up. Each activity covers identifying 1 more or 1 less than any given number.

This pack includes ideas for the following areas:

• Maths games area – find 1 less using a number track and labelled dice

• Construction area – knock one brick off of a tower and say how many bricks are left

• Creative area – draw a monster with teeth and say how many left after one tooth falls out

• Small World area – toy cars in parking bays and say how many cars are left after one drives away

• Outdoor area – jump back one on a chalk number track and say what 1 less is

• Water area – ‘rescue’ one object at a time from the water and say how many objects left

• Outdoor – bowl over one skittle at a time and say how many are skittles left

• Role play area – count how many passengers are still on the bus after one gets off

How do our continuous provision resources work?

Our Continuous Provision resources work best alongside our teaching PowerPoints, which walk you through the whole lesson along with other lesson resources that you can find on our 1 Less lesson page. Children can use the activities to flexibly access their learning to improve fluency or to deepen and apply their knowledge as part of their reasoning and problem solving.

The Continuous Provision activities:

• Can be used at different points throughout the lesson.

• Can be used alongside the Varied Fluency and Reasoning and Problem Solving worksheets to provide meaningful opportunities for practice.

• Can be used to revisit the activities to consolidate their understanding, giving them the time and space to really focus and deepen their thinking and reasoning skills, which supports mastery of the concept.

• Support observation and assessment as children apply their learning independently through play.
