What's included in the 1 More resource and why is it useful?

Year 1 1 More Adult-Led Practical Activities resource provides planning for setting up tasks using everyday classroom objects. There are three main activities which match the questions on the Varied Fluency resource. The second Why not try... page provides three extra opportunities for children to engage in the learning.

Each activity has Core, Support and Stretch questions which have been carefully designed to help you meet each child where they are at, to ensure progress for every child, not just the average child. These questions can be adapted to suit the needs of individual learners. Each practical activity covers identifying one more or one less than a number within 10.

This resource includes:

1 More Practical Activities

• Activity 1: build a staircase tower and add 1 block at a time to find 1 more than each number

• Activity 2: find 1 more than a given number on a number track

You will need:

• blocks

• number tracks

• counters

Why not try…

• create a number story with bears and represent the numbers using cubes

• find 1 more than a digit card

• read a counting story and represent with cubes, adding 1 more each time

How do our adult-led practical activities resources work?

Our Adult-Led Practical Activities resources work best alongside our teaching PowerPoints, which walk you through the whole lesson along with other lesson resources that you can find on our 1 More lesson page. It can be used alongside or in combination with the teaching PowerPoint.

These practical activities:

• Provide opportunities for teaching, to explore the concept and experience it through concrete resources.

• Are suitable for completion in small groups or whole class teaching.

• Are flexible with a choice of three activities and thinking questions that are ‘levelled’ for the teacher to use with different groups of children.

• Provide extension through the ‘Why not try…’ activities page – these could be done with the children or to set up in the continuous provision area whilst working with groups of children.
