What's included in the Subtraction - Take Away/Cross Out (How Many Left?) Adult-Led Practical Activities resource and why is it useful?

Year 1 Subtraction - Take Away/Cross Out (How Many Left?) Adult-Led Practical Activities resource provides planning for setting up tasks using everyday classroom objects. There are two main activities which match the questions on the Varied Fluency resource. The second Why not try... page provides three extra opportunities for children to engage in the learning.

Each activity has Core, Support and Stretch questions which have been carefully designed to help you meet each child where they are at, to ensure progress for every child, not just the average child. These questions can be adapted to suit the needs of individual learners. Each practical activity covers how to represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 10.

This resource includes:

Subtraction - Take Away/Cross Out (How Many Left?) Practical Activities

• Activity 1: Falling Leaves. Children make some leaves fall off a tree and tell a first, then, now story.

• Activity 2: Draw and Cross Out. Children draw a group, cross some out and say how many are left.

You will need:

• a paper tree and paper leaves with sticky tack

• mini whiteboards and pens

• counters to check with

Why not try…

• Five Little Ducks - Sing the Five Little Ducks song. Take one duck away each verse. Children say how many ducks are left.

• Bus Stop - Put some small world people on a toy bus. Some people get off. Children count how many are still on the bus.

• Sandcastle Knock Down - Children build sandcastles. They knock some down, then count how many are still standing.

How do our adult-led practical activities resources work?

Our Adult-Led Practical Activities resources work best alongside our teaching PowerPoints, which walk you through the whole lesson along with other lesson resources that you can find on our Subtraction - Take Away/Cross Out (How Many Left?) lesson page. It can be used alongside or in combination with the teaching PowerPoint.

These practical activities:

• Provide opportunities for teaching, to explore the concept and experience it through concrete resources.

• Are suitable for completion in small groups or whole class teaching.

• Are flexible with a choice of two activities and thinking questions that are ‘levelled’ for the teacher to use with different groups of children.

• Provide extension through the ‘Why not try…’ activities page – these could be done with the children or to set up in the continuous provision area whilst working with groups of children.
