Speech Unit Plan

Planning

Do you want some guidance on how to teach direct and indirect speech? Then check out our Year 4 Speech Unit Plan. We've included an example timetable of when and how long it will take to teach this unit of work, how it links to the national curriculum and a suggested lesson sequence.

Each lesson, or small step, has a notes and guidance section that outlines what children should already know and the expected lesson outcomes. There's also a set of focused questions that you, or any other adult, can use to assess children's understanding. We'd recommend using the planning for each lesson alongside the other resources, such as the teaching PowerPoint, worksheets and much more.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Indicate grammatical and other features by: Using and punctuating direct speech / Use of inverted commas and other punctuation to indicate direct speech [for example, a comma after the reporting clause; end punctuation within inverted commas: The conductor shouted, "Sit down!"]
