Looking for some guidance on how to approach the teaching of direct speech? Stop your search, and use this Year 3 Speech Unit Plan!

This resource includes a proposed timetable of when to teach this unit of lessons within the year, as well as a series of small steps or lessons, with linked objectives. The lessons guide children through recognising direct speech, punctuating it and then how to write direct speech in easy-to-follow steps to help children gain a secure understanding of this unit of work.

Each small step includes a notes and guidance section to give teachers an overview on what children should already know about the topic and the intended lesson outcomes. There's also a focused questions section that any adult can use to prompt discussion within your class. You will find a number of resources, such as teaching PowerPoints, worksheets and much more to accompany the lesson too.
