Continue the Year 5 unit on 'living things and their habitats' with this lesson on the variation in animal life cycles.

In this Year 5 PowerPoint, pupils will revisit four types of organism (mammals, amphibians, insects and birds) and investigate the life cycle of each in turn, using key vocabulary such as 'vertebrate' and 'cold-blooded'. Slides illustrate the life cycle of each animal type, with exceptions such as the platypus and salamanders explained in the notes.

For their tasks, children will produce a resource to show the life cycle of a chosen organism and then write a blog comparing the life cycles of two different types of organism. This could be extended into English lessons for deeper writing opportunities or kept within Science as a chance to include writing across the curriculum.

National Curriculum Objectives:

  • Describe the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, and insect and a bird.
