Use this Year 5 Compare Volume Reasoning and Problem Solving resource to give your class an opportunity to solve problems related to comparing volume.
The first reasoning question focuses children's attention on the fact that a shape that is taller is not necessarily greater in volume. The second and third questions are problem solving questions. These require pupils to think of more than one solution to the problem presented. This encourages resilience and flexible thinking. Each question has two similar parts to promote confidence.
This resource is spread over two pages to allow pupils to see cubes clearly and count them accurately. A single page answer sheet is provided to enable teachers to assess work quickly and pupils to mark their own work.
A varied fluency resource is also available for this small step.
