Use this Year 6 Explore Shapes with the Same Area Reasoning and Problem Solving resource to let your class apply their knowledge of shape and area to problem solving.

The first problem solving question asks children to use what they know about rectilinear shapes and quadrilaterals to draw different examples with the same area. Although a squared grid is provided on the worksheet, you might find it useful to prepare some extra squared paper for children to use.

In the second and third questions, children examine statements about shapes with the same area to decide whether they are correct. In each case, they explain their ideas using mathematical language connected to the topic.

An answer sheet is included to make marking quick and easy for teachers and for children who are self marking their work.

A varied fluency resource is available for this small step.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Recognise that shapes with the same areas can have different perimeters and vice versa
