Discover the frightening reality of life in World War II with our KS2 Letters from the Trenches Guided Reading Pack. Written in the style of a series of letters, pupils will read about life during World War II from the perspective of the soldiers. Children will learn about the features of informal letters, retrieve information and make inferences based on different character's language. This resource also comes accompanied by additional tasks focused upon word definitions and commas.

National Curriculum Objectives:

Reading: English Year 3 and Year 4

Develop positive attitudes to reading and understanding of what they read by:

- listening to and discussing a wide range of fiction, poetry, plays, non-fiction and reference books or textbooks;

- reading books that are structured in different ways and reading for a range of purposes.

Understand what they read, in books they can read independently, by:

- checking that the text makes sense to them, discussing their understanding and explaining the meaning of words in context;

- asking questions to improve their understanding of a text;

- drawing inferences such as inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions, and justifying inferences with evidence;

- identifying main ideas drawn from more than one paragraph and summarising these;

- identifying how language, structure, and presentation contribute to meaning.

English Year 4

- Standard English forms for verb inflections instead of local spoken forms (for example, we were instead of we was, or I did instead of I done).
