What’s included in the Switch Off Fortnight Challenge resource and why is it useful?

Year 1 and Year 2 Switch Off Fortnight Challenge is a printable one-page sheet for each child to take home, with 10 small jobs they can do to save energy, like turning off a light when they leave a room or putting on a jumper instead of turning up the heating. Each challenge is one short sentence, so most children can read it themselves. Anything involving a plug or a charger asks children to get a grown-up to help, so they aren’t handling electrical items on their own.

How to use this resource

Read through the challenges together before the sheet goes home, so children know what each one means. Words like “standby” may need a quick explanation. Children colour in each challenge once they’ve completed it, then bring the sheet back at the end of the fortnight with their total filled in at the bottom.

If your class is learning about looking after the planet, the sheet fits easily into a wider topic. Our Earth Day resources and Sustainability resources have more ideas for you to look at in more detail.
