Consolidate understanding of how to use a formula to calculate the area of a triangle by using this resource.

This Year 6 Area of a Triangle (Using Formula) Fluency Matrix worksheet builds on the previous small step about finding a triangle's area by counting squares to show how to use a formula (base x height divided by 2) to calculate any triangle's area. Over six questions that gradually increase in challenge, children will count squares to find a triangle's area, use a rectangle's measurements to calculate a triangle's area, apply the formula to calculate area, compare area and find missing lengths. All answers are also included so that marking is as easy as possible!

A reasoning and problem solving resource and varied fluency worksheet are also available for this small step.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Calculate the area of parallelograms and triangles
  • Recognise when it is possible to use formulae for the volume of shapes
