Use this Year 6 Volume of a Cuboid (Using the Formula) Reasoning and Problem Solving resource to allow your pupils to use the formula V=lwh to find the volume of a cuboid.

Children will explore if volume of cuboids has been compared correctly, find the volume of cuboids and add together to find totals, then finally identify the volume of a cuboid that satisfies a problem. There are two similar versions of each question to encourage fluency and confidence. Column A uses numbers less than 12 to promote familiarity of applying known tables whereas column B goes beyond known tables facts.

An answer sheet is included for teachers and children marking their own work.

A varied fluency resource is also available for this small step.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Calculate, estimate and compare volume of cubes and cuboids using standard units, including cubic centimetres (cm3) and cubic metres (m3), and extending to other units [for example, mm3 and km3]
  • Recognise when it is possible to use formulae for the volume of shapes
