Y2 Grammar Punctuation and Spelling
This Consolidating Prefixes and Suffixes lesson covers the prior learning of adding 'un', before moving onto the main skill of consolidating knowledge of prefixes and suffixes.
The lesson starts with a prior learning activity to check pupils’ understanding. If they need more practice, you can choose other resources for that step. Children can then practise further by completing the activities and can extend their learning with engaging reasoning and application tasks.
National Curriculum Objective
English Year 1: (1G6.2) How the prefix un– changes the meaning of verbs and adjectives [negation, for example, unkind, or undoing: untie the boat]
English Year 1: (1G6.3) Suffixes that can be added to verbs where no change is needed in the spelling of root words (e.g. helping, helped, helper)
English Year 2: (2G6.3) Formation of nouns using suffixes such as –ness, –er and by compounding [for example, whiteboard, superman]
English Year 2: (2G6.3) Formation of adjectives using suffixes such as –ful, –less (A fuller list of suffixes can be found in the year 2 spelling section in English Appendix 1)
English Year 2: (2G6.3) Use of the suffixes –er, –est in adjectives
