Discussion points for teachers

1. How could Renata work out how many planets are in the nebula?
Discuss the number of moons and how many each planet has. Discuss which operation we need to use to find the answer. Discuss how to use the long division method and alternative methods. This question is open-ended for the children to explore.
Various answers, for example: long division or using factors.

2. How many planets are there?
Discuss which method is appropriate and complete the calculation.
215 planets.

3. Renata needs to report back with the number of kilometres the meteors are travelling every hour. Help her to work this out.
Discuss the information that is missing and the number of hours in a day. Discuss how to use long division to solve the problem.
9,984 ÷ 24 = 416 so the metres are travelling 416km every hour.

4. How many volunteers could be in each team? Discuss the information given and how best to go about solving the problem.
Discuss what information we need to check from the previous screen to make sure we are answering the question fully.
There could be 15 teams with 544 volunteers or 16 teams with 510 volunteers.

5. Renata was told that there are a total of 4,992 meteors heading for the Starshine Nebula. Help her to complete the order.
Discuss the best method to solve this problem.
4,992 ÷ 32 = 156
