National Curriculum Objectives

Mathematics Year 2: (2M1) Compare and order lengths, mass, volume/capacity and record the results using >, < and =

Mathematics Year 2: (2M2) Choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure length/height in any direction (m/cm); mass (kg/g); temperature (°C); capacity (litres/ml) to the nearest appropriate unit using rulers, scales, thermometers and measuring vessels

Mathematics Year 3: (3M9b) Add and subtract lengths (m/ cm/ mm)

Differentiation for Year 2 Four Operations with Lengths:

Varied Fluency
Developing Questions to support adding, subtracting, doubling and halving of measures; same measures only.
Expected Questions to support adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing of measures by 2, 5, 10; same measures only.
Greater Depth Questions to support adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing of measures by 2, 5, 10; mixed measures (m and cm).

Reasoning and Problem Solving
Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Problem Solving)
Developing Complete the calculation using add, subtract, double, half; same measures only.
Expected Complete the calculation using add, subtract, multiply & divide by 2, 5, 10; same measures only.
Greater Depth Complete the calculation using add, subtract, multiply & divide by 2, 5, 10; mixed measures (m and cm).

Questions 2, 5 and 8 (Reasoning)
Developing Identify if the child is correct by using add, subtract, double, half; same measures only.
Expected Identify if the child is correct by using add, subtract, multiply & divide by 2, 5, 10; same measures only.
Greater Depth Identify if the child is correct using add, subtract, multiply & divide by 2, 5, 10; mixed measures (m and cm).

Questions 3, 6 and 9 (Problem Solving)
Developing Use either add, subtract, double, half; same measures only to complete the word problem.
Expected Use either add, subtract, multiply & divide by 2, 5, 10; same measures only to complete the word problem.
Greater Depth Use either add, subtract, multiply & divide by 2, 5, 10; mixed measures (m and cm) to complete the word problem.

Differentiation for Year 3 Add Lengths:
Varied Fluency
Developing Questions to support adding two lengths, using mixed units and direct conversions (cm to m) No exchanging. i.e. 32cm + 8m 12cm.
Expected Questions to support adding 2 or 3 lengths, using some mixed units with only one conversion and some exchanging, i.e. 2m + 1m 54cm + 38cm.
Greater Depth Questions to support adding 3 or 4 lengths, using mixed units with indirect conversions (mm to m) and some exchanging. Questions require multiple conversions, i.e. 2m + 1m 50cm + 150mm.

Reasoning and Problem Solving
Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Problem Solving)
Developing Find the largest total distance that three children threw two beanbags. Distances given in mixed units and direct conversions between cm and m. No exchanging. i.e. 32cm + 8m 12cm.
Expected Find the largest total distance that three children threw three beanbags. Distances given in mixed units and direct conversions between mm, cm and m.
Greater Depth Find the largest total distance that three children threw three beanbags. Distances given in mixed units and direct conversions between mm, cm and m, requiring multiple conversions.

Questions 2, 5 and 8 (Problem Solving)
Developing Find which two vehicles will fit on the bridge at once. Bridge measured in m. Vehicles measures in cm. No exchange.
Expected Find which three vehicles will fit on the bridge at once. Bridge measured in m and cm. Vehicles measures in cm.
Greater Depth Find which three vehicles will fit on the bridge at once. Bridge measured in m and cm. Vehicles measures in cm and mm.

Questions 3, 6 and 9 (Reasoning)
Developing Find the odd one out between 3 calculations. Addition calculations with two lengths. Lengths given in mixed units and direct conversions between cm and m. No exchanging. i.e. 32cm + 8m 12cm.
Expected Find the odd one out between 3 calculations. Addition calculations with two or three lengths. Lengths given in mixed units and direct conversions between mm, cm and m.
Greater Depth Find the odd one out between 3 calculations. Addition calculations with three or four lengths. Lengths given in mixed units and direct conversions between mm, cm and m, requiring multiple conversions.
