Discussion points for teachers

  1. What are the largest and smallest numbers of ice creams he could have sold? Discuss which values in a 4-digit number round up and round down.
  2. What amounts does Fabio need to tell the bank? Discuss what each value represents, and whether to round up or down.
  3. Round the values to the nearest thousand to help Fabio work out where to position his ice cream cart. Discuss what each value represents and use of unconventional partitioning, discuss which digit to look at to decide whether to round up or down.
  4. How many ice creams could Fabio have sold? Discuss what the greatest and smallest value could be, discuss how many different possible answers there could be. This question is open-ended for children to explore.
