Have a look at this practical way to teach place value! This Year 4 Represent Numbers up to 10,000 Practical Activities resource includes two activities. The first is a paired task where pupils are asked to generate a 4-digit number using a ten-sided dice and find different ways to represent it. The second is a group work activity where students are asked to use digit cards to generate a 4-digit number and represent the largest odd number and smallest even number they can make using those cards. The use of a variety of maths manipulatives is suggested, including place value counters, Base 10 and a part-whole model.
